One-Shot

Fred Weasley, one of the most inventive of modern wizards, was engaged to Hermione Granger, the brightest witch of her age. This extraordinary pairing came as a surprise — even to the Weasley family. Mrs. Weasley, although happy to have Hermione as a daughter-in-law, thought that Ron would have been a better choice.

Mrs. Weasley brought the photo album of the twins’ baby pictures to the table. “Fred and George looked so much alike as babies that we placed a non-permanent tattoo charm on Fred’s foot to tell them apart. It wore off once, and we had to have a family conference to decide which baby was which.” She smiled fondly in remembrance.

Fred leaned over the back of Hermione’s chair and spoke into her ear, “Maybe you’re really engaged to George and not Fred.”

Hermione shivered in response to Fred’s smooth voice in her ear. Turning to kiss him, she replied, “As long as I’m engaged to you, I don’t care what your name is.”

Mrs. Weasley said, “I had five boys at the time I was putting this album together, so most of the pictures aren’t labelled. I’ll tell you which baby is Fred.”

Hermione looked at the pictures on the first page. “I can pick him out in some of these pictures. Look, he had that grin — even before he had all his teeth. George smiles; Fred grins.”

Fred grinned as his mum looked slightly dumbfounded. Hermione turned another page. “Oh, there’s that quirk to his eyebrow. And this picture shows how his left dimple was already deeper than his right. What a cutie!”

Not many outside the immediate family could distinguish the twins’ differences. Molly looked at Hermione and Fred thoughtfully, mind suddenly opened to the extraordinary possibilities.
