This first chapter has a bit of everything: a permanently silent house-elf, an exploding owl, indignant chronic bellyachers—both of them—, and the missing love of Severus' life. Except that Severus didn't know he had a "love of his life." It was great to be doing something again! I find myself in complete agreement with Gladiola Jambull. I, too, am a witch of fifty-plus years who has fallen ‘in love’ with the ‘spy who won Dumbledore’s war.’It's so good to see this new story by Subversa and SubHub!!! Not only do you two make a perfect couple, you make a helluva writing team.Beth

so nice to have another story by you and subhub. i feel a little bad about the owl, but you effectively established the seriousness of the problem there. i'm really looking forward to getting to know this particular incarnation of snape a little better as he sinks his teeth into solving this problem.

As you say, it established the unscrupulousness of the kidnappers. but it was a rather brutal way to do so. Thank you for your lovely comment!
I like it! I can actually see Severus methodically working his way through his routine and being slightly muddled at the routine not being routine all of a sudden.

Okay, I haven't read the chapter yet. And I won't, because recently I decided not to read WIP's--mainly because I find that reading them piecemeal doesn't allow for full appreciation of the fic the way reading it all at once does, at least for me. But I am BEYOND EXCITED that you have a new fic and I cannot WAIT to read it when it's done. YAY!

Someone with access to the Archives after hours, so it might be a Ministry employee... but not a Death Eater? You've got me stumped! I'm looking forward to more revelations and more action. ~pets you~~whispers~ Don't tell anyone else, JuneBug, but the exploding owl was only an optical illusion. No owls were harmed in the making of this chapter. As for house-elves and slavery, you know what Hagrid said: they like to have a house to take care of and a wizard to serve. Dobby was an oddball for a house-elf. Severus doesn't mistreat Gabs, I promise you. The two of them get along very well together.Hang in there. It'll get better!

Optical illusion.... I'm hanging on to that!! This is a no-kill zone for owls. 
And we're off! Now who do we know who spends a lot of time in The Archives and has hair like a rat's tale, hmmmm? I am greatly relieved that the Ministry couldn't manage to embarrass Severus with their belated guilt. He deserves it! I shall look forward to seeing Snape's niffler-like tenacity showing soon.~Scurries off to put aside some Halloween candy to munch on during future chapters.~

Updates will be realtively quick on this story! I don't think he'll mind, as long as the hug actually is delivered by me. 
Please pass an enthusiastic thanks to Subhub for tickling your SSHG muse! This promises to be an intriging tale. Severus seems rather pleased with his life of leisure, although his finally thought that 'it was great to be doing something again' shows that something is missing. Gabs looks to be an interesting original character. You have definately given us some great house elves in past stories. Now these bad guys - well, how evil do you have to be to just blow-up the poor messanger owl? I expect I know who the rat tail/hair curl, that smells like the Wizarding Archives no less, belong to. But how have they connected her to Severus? That remains the question, hmm. Can't wait for your next update.
