Dumbledore is a master of manipulation, isn't he? Although in this particular situation, I suppose he is trying to find the best possible solution out of the many bad ones.

Yes, no twinkly Dumbledore, sadly. I will agree that he's trying to find the best possible solution, but it is also another example of him sacrificing Severus without a backward glance. Thanks so much for the note!

I would hate to think anything of this story is DH's legacy, but obviously, my characterization of Dumbledore comes from my feelings around DH. I think Severus mentions his soul because, I think the necessity of opening himself up to Hermione to some extent equates, in his mind, to surrendering the hidden, protected core of himself to someone else - and for this to be at AD's instigation is just too much, for him. Yes, he's the best one, because it is a horrible thing them both, to be forced into something they would not have chosen at this juncture of their lives. I do ache for him, having to risk his terribly solitary soul in a forced intimacy.

This is the Dumbledore that I can easily buy into. Not necessarily evil, but does everything in his power to see to the right thing being done.
