A Place Where Families Are Made

The paint reflects sunlight. Sounds bounce upstairs; the children are being children. Wind rustles over the meadow and through the window, continuously blowing it open.

Floorboards shine from countless coatings of wax. Herbs grow in pots on the window; their scents tinge the air. Cookies bake in the oven. A fire glows brightly and cheerily in the grate. An apron, dusted with flour, hangs on a peg near the stove. Boots, covered in mud, lay in piles near the back door, waiting to be cleaned.

Cupboards shuffle contents around as everything vies for a space to set. Pots bang in the sink. The table finishes scrubbing itself. The clock shows no inkling of trouble.

After years of use, counters, tables and sills no longer cause splinters.

Satisfaction swirls all around and magic hums in the air.

A/N: Saturday Night Drabble prompt: A couple has found a special place to shag. Describe the place in 200 to 300 words using no adjectives. Poetry and pure dialogue not allowed. I didn't quite make 200, but still... *sigh

Very nice indeed! I had a very strong image of the Burrow in mind as I was reading this--was that what you had in mind?

Response from sara lady dalian (Author of A Place Where Families Are Made)

That was exactly what I was going for.  I have always loved the strong feminine images and conotations that come there - as well as wondering if Arthur put buns in the oven while in the kitchen nearly as much as Molly.  *smiles - thanks for reading and reviewing.  Hugs and Chocolates - Sara

Amazing example of how you can paint a picture with no adjectives.

Response from sara lady dalian (Author of A Place Where Families Are Made)

I was quite surprised that I made it through without any adjectives.  I was short on the word count but had said everything I wanted to say.  Thanks for the review - hugs and chocolates to you.  Sara

This could so easily describe Molly's kitchen. Very well done and original use of the prompt.

Response from sara lady dalian (Author of A Place Where Families Are Made)

I meant it to describe her kitchen.  Harry thought of the Burrow as one of the most amazing places he had ever been - and he is right.  The Burrow symbolizes so much of what magic is, and Molly's kitchen has so many feminine conotations that it has always facinated me.  Thanks snitch for the review.  Sara

Thanks Blue- I think Sunny was wanting something more citrusy, but this is what came out.  Sara

Oh how cool, a magical home. It seems like the Burrow, but then it could really be anyone's home. But it's a home, truly! Love it.

Response from sara lady dalian (Author of A Place Where Families Are Made)

I will vastly admit that I was thinking of the Burrow - especially with the line about the clock.  But it could be many magical homes.  I certainally wish it were mine.  Self cleaning pots, self scrubbing tables - all things to warm a girls heart and inspire affections.  Hugs and chocolates - Sara

I loved this!  What a warm wonderful kitchen.  "The table finished scrubbing itself."  Your piece is so descriptive and so happy.  I wish I lived there.

Response from sara lady dalian (Author of A Place Where Families Are Made)

Oh - I wish I lived there, as well.  My table is always in need of scrubbing; my pots are always in need of cleaning.  Can you think of all the time that could be saved by not having these things to do by hand, and all the affections that could be saved if there were no fighting about clean up chores? Hugs and chocolates - Sara

Splinters!  LOL :)

Response from sara lady dalian (Author of A Place Where Families Are Made)

Counter boards were undoubtedly more fresh when the eldest of the family were first made.  *smiles...  Thanks for the interesting prompt.  Hope you liked it.  Hugs and chocolate - Sara
