It's a start.... I'm not entirely happy with him for keeping so much a secret from her (arsehole!) HOWEVER, I will give him the benefit of the doubt and say he'd better explain himself in full detail before I declare him innocent.

Oh no!  In the beginning I thought Severus has found another woman's "affections" very attractive, but the more I read, the more unsure I am of what is going on.  On the one hand, Severus is going out during the evenings and offering little or no information about what he does.  But on the other hand, he seems to genuinely care for Hermione.Going to a harlot's house?  Scourgifying himself multiple times to be safe?  What had he found when he "had turned up what he had expected?"  Why must he keep these activities from Hermione if it harmless to their marriage?Hermione still knows so little of his past, so she has ample grist for the mill of worst-case scenarios.  Is she the one who has been following him on his "mission?"I'm looking forward to seeing where you take this!Beth

Oh man, this doesn't sound good but appearances are often deceiving.  ~sigh~  Poor Hermione, I hope things look up for her soon or that she at leasts gathers some gumption and hexes her husband into next week.
